Lasch begins by examining the Puritan roots of American intellectualism, arguing that the Puritans' emphasis on literacy and education laid the foundation for a thinking class that would play a vital role in American history. He then follows the development of American intellectual life through the Enlightenment, the Revolutionary War, and the early republic, showing how ideas from Europe and the New World combined to create a uniquely American intellectual tradition.
In the 19th century, the American thinking class expanded rapidly, thanks to the growth of colleges and universities and the rise of a mass reading public. Lasch argues that this expansion had a profound impact on American society, leading to the development of new ideas and institutions that would shape the course of American history.
In the 20th century, the American thinking class faced new challenges, including the rise of mass culture and the decline of traditional sources of authority. Lasch argues that these challenges have led to a crisis in American intellectual life, and he calls for a new intellectual class that can help us to understand and navigate the complexities of the modern world.
The Making of an American Thinking Class is a magisterial work of intellectual history that will be essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the development of American culture and society.
