The Hillside Stranglers: A True Tale of Serial Murder and the Pursuit of Justice
By Darcy Brien
In the annals of true crime, few cases are as notorious as that of the Hillside Stranglers. Over a nine-month period in 1977 and 1978, 10 young women were brutally murdered in the hills overlooking Los Angeles. The victims, who ranged in age from 12 to 28, were all sexually assaulted and strangled. Their bodies were found dumped in remote locations, often near hiking trails.

The murders sent shockwaves through the city and sparked a massive manhunt. Police initially suspected that the crimes were the work of a single individual, but as the investigation progressed, it became clear that there were two killers involved. The first suspect to be arrested was Kenneth Bianchi, a 25-year-old drifter who had been living in Los Angeles for several months. Bianchi confessed to killing four of the victims and implicated his cousin, Angelo Buono, in the other murders.
Buono, a 43-year-old former record producer, initially denied any involvement in the crimes. However, after Bianchi agreed to testify against him, Buono changed his plea to guilty. Both men were sentenced to life in prison.
The Hillside Stranglers case is a chilling reminder of the darkness that can exist in the human heart. The murders were senseless and cruel, and the victims were robbed of their lives in the most horrific way. Darcy Brien's book tells the story of these crimes in a gripping and unflinching way. It is a must-read for anyone interested in true crime or the history of Los Angeles.
