Benjamin Lay was a Quaker abolitionist who dedicated his life to fighting against the evils of slavery. Born in England in 1681, Lay emigrated to the American colonies in 1698. He settled in Philadelphia, where he became involved in the Quaker community. Lay was deeply troubled by the institution of slavery, and he believed that it was a violation of God's law. He began to speak out against slavery, and he soon became one of the most vocal abolitionists in the colonies.
