The Early Years

Charles Luciano was born in Lercara Friddi, Sicily, in 1897. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1906, and settled in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. As a young man, Luciano was involved in petty crime, but he quickly rose through the ranks of the New York underworld. By the early 1920s, he was a major figure in the city's organized crime scene.

In 1929, Luciano became the head of the Luciano crime family, which controlled gambling, bootlegging, and other illegal activities in New York. Under Luciano's leadership, the family became one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the country. Luciano was also a major figure in the Castellammarese War, a bloody conflict between rival Mafia factions in New York.

The Celebrity Gangster

In the 1930s, Luciano became a celebrity in his own right. He was featured in newspapers and magazines, and he was even the subject of a Hollywood movie. Luciano's celebrity status was due in part to his flamboyant lifestyle and his charismatic personality. He was also known for his intelligence and his business acumen.

Luciano's celebrity status gave him a level of protection from law enforcement. He was able to operate with impunity for years, even though he was known to be one of the most powerful criminals in the country.

The Downfall

In 1936, Luciano was finally arrested and charged with compulsory prostitution. He was convicted and sentenced to 30 to 50 years in prison. Luciano served 10 years of his sentence before he was paroled in 1946.

After his release from prison, Luciano was deported to Italy. He lived in exile for the rest of his life, and he died in Naples in 1962.

The Legacy

Charles "Lucky" Luciano was one of the most powerful and notorious criminals in American history. He was also a celebrity, and his life and death were a reflection of the changing nature of American society.

Luciano's legacy is complex. He was a ruthless criminal, but he was also a charismatic and intelligent man. He was a product of his time, and his life and death tell us a lot about the history of American crime.
