The Revolutionary War
The Revolutionary War was the first major conflict in which Black soldiers fought for the United States. Although slavery was still legal at the time, many Black men volunteered to fight for their freedom. They served in both the Continental Army and the Navy, and they played a key role in the American victory.
One of the most famous Black soldiers of the Revolutionary War was Crispus Attucks. He was a free Black man who was killed in the Boston Massacre in 1770. His death helped to spark the American Revolution, and he is considered a national hero.
The Civil War

More than one million Black soldiers served in World War II, and they played a vital role in the Allied victory. They fought in all theaters of the war, and they distinguished themselves in combat.
The Tuskegee Airmen were one of the most famous Black units of World War II. This group of fighter pilots was trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama. They flew more than 15,000 combat missions, and they never lost a single bomber to enemy fire.
The Korean War
The Korean War was a cold war conflict between the United States and North Korea. Black soldiers served in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps, and they fought with distinction on the Korean Peninsula.
One of the most famous Black soldiers of the Korean War was Benjamin O. Davis Jr. He was the first Black general in the U.S. Air Force, and he led the 332nd Fighter-Interceptor Wing in combat.
The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was a controversial conflict, and Black soldiers served in large numbers on both sides. They fought in the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the South Vietnamese Army.
One of the most famous Black soldiers of the Vietnam War was Frederick C. Murphy. He was a medic in the U.S. Army, and he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism in the Battle of Ia Drang.
