Military Service

Jenkins' military career began with basic training at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. He quickly distinguished himself as a skilled and dedicated soldier, rising through the ranks and eventually earning the position of platoon sergeant in the 29th Infantry Division. In 1944, Jenkins and his division were deployed to Europe, where they would face some of the fiercest fighting of the war.

Jenkins' courage and leadership were first put to the test during the Battle of Normandy. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, he led his men ashore at Omaha Beach, one of the most heavily defended sectors of the invasion. Despite facing intense enemy fire, Jenkins pushed forward, inspiring his troops with his unwavering determination.

In the aftermath of D-Day, Jenkins and his division fought their way across France, Belgium, and into Germany. During the Battle of the Bulge, Jenkins' platoon was tasked with holding a critical crossroads against a determined German counteroffensive. Jenkins and his men fought valiantly, repelling wave after wave of enemy attacks. For his actions during the battle, Jenkins was awarded the Silver Star, one of the highest military honors for gallantry.

On April 9, 1945, Jenkins' unit was engaged in heavy fighting near the town of Merkers, Germany. As his platoon advanced, they came under intense fire from a German machine gun nest. Without hesitation, Jenkins charged forward, using his body to shield his men from the deadly hail of bullets. Jenkins was severely wounded, losing his right arm and suffering multiple other injuries. Despite his wounds, he refused to be evacuated until he was sure his men were safe.

For his extraordinary heroism, Jenkins was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration for valor in the United States. He was one of only 473 soldiers to receive the Medal of Honor during World War II.

Post-War Life

After the war, Jenkins returned to the United States a hero. He was celebrated for his bravery and sacrifice and became a sought-after speaker and author. Jenkins used his platform to advocate for peace and reconciliation, sharing his wartime experiences and promoting the importance of tolerance and understanding.

In 1946, Jenkins married his sweetheart, Mary Lou, and they had three children together. He worked as a successful businessman and became involved in various civic and charitable organizations. Jenkins remained dedicated to serving his community and country, inspiring countless others with his message of hope and resilience.
