This book explores the tension between freedom and authority in the Baptist South from 1785 to 1900. It examines how Baptists negotiated the balance between individual liberty and the need for church Free Download, and how these tensions shaped the development of Baptist polity and practice.

The book is divided into three parts. The first part examines the early history of the Baptist South, from the founding of the first Baptist churches in the region to the American Revolution. This period was marked by a great deal of freedom and autonomy for individual churches. However, it also saw the development of some important denominational institutions, such as the Baptist General Association of Virginia.

The second part of the book examines the period from the American Revolution to the Civil War. This period was marked by a growing tension between freedom and authority. On the one hand, Baptists continued to value individual liberty. On the other hand, they also began to recognize the need for a more centralized denominational structure. This tension was reflected in the debates over such issues as slavery, missions, and education.

The third part of the book examines the period from the Civil War to 1900. This period was marked by a gradual shift towards a more centralized denominational structure. This shift was due in part to the growing number of Baptists in the South, as well as the increasing influence of urban centers. It was also due to the rise of new denominational leaders, such as John A. Broadus and Basil Manly Jr.

This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of the Baptist South. It provides a comprehensive overview of the tension between freedom and authority in the region, and it offers new insights into the development of Baptist polity and practice.
